LUCAS VAN MERWIJK
Lucas van Merwijk, geboren in 1961, raakte reeds op jonge leeftijd in de ban van de trommels.
Hij werd door de lezers van De Slagwerkkrant tussen 1993 en 2013 vele malen gekozen tot beste jazz alsmede beste world/fusion drummer. Lucas heeft in zeer veel nederlandse groepen gespeeld en is al sinds 1985 de drummer van de nr 1 Latin Jazz groep van Europa, Nueva Manteca.
Lucas leidt momenteel de internationaal vermaarde Cubop City Big Band, het slagwerkduo Drumix!, met de afrikaanse sabar master drummer Aly N`Diaye Rose en de 9 man sterke wereldpercussie groep Drums United. Na een intensieve studie afro-cubaanse drums in Cuba bij drummer Oscarito Valdes (Irakere, Afro Cuba), is Lucas sindsdien actief als drummer en percussionis bij diverse groepen en artiesten in Nederland en Europa.
Van Merwijk heeft aan vele cd producties zijn medewerking verleend en behalve als drummer heeft hij ook als percussionist samengewerkt met tal van groepen.
Naast dit alles is Lucas een veel gevraagd leraar. Buiten zijn sinds 1985 vaste docentschap aan de World Music afdeling van het Codarts Instituut te Rotterdam en het Sweelinck Conservatorium te Amsterdam, wordt hij regelmatig gevraagd voor, workshops en masterclasses en doceert hij als freelance leraar op diverse drums en percussie instituten in Europa en Amerika.
In 2010 ontvangt Lucas de Global Act Award van het Muziek Centrum Nederland voor zijn gehele werk op het gebied van World Music.
